The Caribbean Climate Justice and Resilience Agenda offers a shared vision of climate action by and for civil society and other actors in the Caribbean and seeks to amplify the voices of the most vulnerable and influence national, regional and global policies.
The Agenda was developed collaboratively by the Caribbean Climate Justice Alliance, which brings together over 50 leading civil society organisations, academic and research institutions, creatives, individual champions and activists, media and other non-state actors working across different sectors and aspects of climate justice. The process for development was led by the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI), which currently serves as convenor and secretariat for the Alliance.
It identifies 8 priority needs and actions by 2030, based on deliberative dialogues with vulnerable groups and wider civil society across the region:
- Curbing emissions to limit global temperature increase to 1.5°C
- Scaling up locally-led solutions for adaptation and loss and damage
- Improving access to and delivery of climate finance for frontline communities, small and micro enterprises, and civil society organisations as part of a ‘whole of society’ approach
- Scaling up just, nature-based solutions for adaptation, mitigation, and resilience
- Supporting a just transition for pro-poor, inclusive, sustainable, and resilient development
- Promoting gender equitable and social inclusive approaches to climate action
- Promoting youth and intergenerational equity as core to the climate response
- Ensuring a right-based and earth-centred approach across all these priority areas to enable climate justice
The Agenda is also aligned with key regional and global policies, including the Regional Climate Change Strategic Framework and Implementation Plan, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement, and Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
